COMMODORE DAVID WESTERFIELD
Long Beach Yacht Club
We welcome you all back to the Long Beach Yacht Club’s 53rd
Congressional Cup Match Race Regatta. Since 1965, LBYC has
been hosting the only world match race regatta run totally by
volunteers and, to all of you I say, “thank-you” with a tip of the hat.
The past 5 years of moving up the ranks of the Congressional Cup
Executive Committee have been a gratifying experience; steeped
with the history of world match racing, clubs, regattas, skippers,
crews and all the amazing volunteers, Club members, sponsors
and spectators who have given their dedication, knowledge and
friendship — I am forever grateful to all of you.
This year, as in the past two years, we have again teamed with the
World Match Race Tour as the 2nd stop on the World Tour. We
have an amazing line up with three returning Crimson Blazers
and a young new addition to the world scene from Australia.
Three of our teams sailed into Congressional Cup by winning
the 2017 Ficker Cup or 2016 Grand Slam Series. We are also
fortunate to have an incredible international team of umpires
from five countries; six America’s Cup umpires and two Olympic
Due to limitations with the Belmont Veteran’s Memorial Pier this
year, we are encouraging spectator boats to join us on the water
for up-close excitement as well as public viewing from the pier.
We invite you to Long Beach Yacht Club to watch the live filmed
racing and hear detailed commentary from the Clubhouse
every day. If you’re unable to be on the water or at the pier,
join your Club family at lunch and catch up on the racing
results or join us after the races for our entertaining press
conferences and camaraderie. You can also follow it live online
with video and audio atwww.thecongressionalcup.com
, Twitter at
and Instagram at
. Both the website
and this program include a great deal of history, information
and fun facts, including stories on the world of match racing,
umpiring, skippers, race committee and lots more.
Our Club members are excited to have the opportunity to share
our hospitality which this event is so famous for. The hallmark
of this month is to re-unite with old friends and make new ones.
Come join the fun!
